About the event
Ever conscious of the unfolding ecological collapse that confronts us, Bristol Fungarium's founder, Tom, chose to find meaning through working the land in 2008 as an organic veg farmer. 10 years later, Bristol Fungarium was born with the mission is to cultiva, process and provide the best medicinal mushroom products available here in the UK - with the least negative impact on our local environment, while inspiring and educating people about the history, science and healing opportunities of the mushrooms they grow and love.
Bristol Fungarium strive to do things differently by offering native strains, organically grown, processed, and packed under a single roof. We want to be the first to not only make the whole supply chain short and transparent - but potentially the only company who knows exactly where our mushroom species originated. We do this by carefully foraging for interesting species, bringing them back to our lab at the farm, and cloning them on plates of agar before fruiting them on myceliated blocks we create with sustainably sourced sawdust and organic wheat bran.
By prioritising strains that are native to the land we live on, we are avoiding the spread of billions of spores from commercial mushroom strains that have been selected specifically for their ability to grow fast and fruit heavily, and will therefore easily outcompete a lot of the mushroom strains we are so lucky to have around the farm.
Our ultimate goal is to utilise the “spent” (leftover) substrate from our mushroom blocks to spearhead mycoremediation projects in our local community, as well as "re-mushrooming" woodlands across the South West with native strains - which has already begun. Bristol Fungarium is a developing story, and this is only the beginning...
