A Local's Guide to Cambridge Heath: East London's Best-Kept Secret

If you know Cambridge Heath, you already know it's special. If you don't — let us introduce you. Tucked between Bethnal Green to the west and Hackney to the north, Cambridge Heath is one of those London neighbourhoods that hasn't been entirely swallowed by gentrification. It still has the bones of its working-class East End heritage, the edge of genuine creative life, and — increasingly — some of the best independent food and drink in the city.

Love Shack sits in three Victorian railway arches on Cambridge Heath Road: a space that feels like it was always here, built slowly from the ground up with furniture that was salvaged, repurposed, and loved into existence. This is our neighbourhood guide.

Getting to Cambridge Heath

Cambridge Heath station is on the Overground, making it easily accessible from almost anywhere in London. The journey from Liverpool Street takes around five minutes. From Hackney Central, it's one stop. Bethnal Green on the Central Line is a 15-minute walk. By bike, it's flat, fast, and easy from Shoreditch, Dalston, and Mile End.

Things to Do Near Love Shack

  • Museum of Childhood, Bethnal Green — a short walk away, a strangely wonderful free museum about toys, games, and growing up. Great for families.

  • Nelly Duff Gallery, Columbia Road — world-class street art and print, a short walk away.

  • Columbia Road Flower Market — Sunday mornings from 8am, one of London's genuine treasures. Combine it with brunch at Love Shack.

  • Victoria Park — a 15-minute walk or 5-minute cycle. One of London's best parks, with a lido, café, and weekend events.

  • Bethnal Green Working Men's Club — an institution. Check their listings for club nights, drag shows, and comedy.

Why Love Shack Belongs in Cambridge Heath

We opened Love Shack here deliberately. This neighbourhood has the values we believe in: community over commerce, creativity over conformity, substance over style. The exposed brick arches, the mismatched furniture salvaged from second-hand markets, the fairy lights strung across the ceiling — none of it was designed by a brand agency. It grew organically, the way this neighbourhood does.
